Last year’s very special commemorative painting was done by Charlottesville artist, Thomas J Coon. This painting depicts Battleship, first American bred and owned horse to win the
British Grand National in 1938 and Mrs. Scott’s most famous horse. (see History page for more details). Battleship is shown with Noel Laing in the saddle, a great young trainer and jockey for Mrs. Scott who died at age 28 in 1936. The feature race of the Montpelier Hunt Races bears his name. They are posed in front of the Temple that James Madison built on the grounds of Montpelier with Marion duPont Scott looking on.
Coon, known for his superb equine and canine portraiture, was specially chosen to paint this year’s commemorative work. Special prints will be available for sale at the races and Mr. Coon will be present to personally sign the prints. Visit his website for further examples of his work or for information on your own animal portrait, THOMASJCOON.com. |
